AP GPA Calculator — Weighted GPA for AP & Honors Courses

Calculate your weighted GPA with AP and Honors courses on a 5.0 scale.

Quick answer: Enter courses, credits and grades to compare unweighted GPA with an example weighted calculation. The preset adds +1.0 for AP/IB and +0.5 for Honors, but high schools set their own bonuses and caps; change the course levels to match your school's published policy.

Weights: Honors +0.5, AP/IB +1.0, capped at 5.0

How it is calculated

Each grade is converted to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0, with ±0.3 steps). Points are multiplied by the course credits, summed, then divided by total credits.

Example: A (4.0) in a 3-credit course + B (3.0) in a 4-credit course = (4.0×3 + 3.0×4) ÷ 7 = 3.43.

What is AP GPA Calculator?

The AP GPA Calculator is preset for students taking Advanced Placement and Honors courses. Its example weighting adds +1.0 for AP/IB and +0.5 for Honors on top of base grade points, so an A would count as 5.0 in an AP course under that scheme. Weighting is set by each high school and is not universal: some schools use different bonuses, caps, or no weighting. Treat the weighted result as an estimate unless the selected course-level bonuses match your transcript policy; the unweighted result uses the underlying grade points without those bonuses.

Common Uses for AP GPA Calculator

  • Compare weighted and unweighted GPA for college applications
  • Check how much your AP load is lifting your class rank

Why the bonus exists

Weighting is how some schools reward rigorous courses without changing the letter grade. A school may add course-level points, cap the result, or use another policy; the existence and size of a bonus are school decisions, not a national rule. CollegeVine describes +1.0 for an AP course as an example and explicitly notes that high-school policies vary. Source: https://www.collegevine.com/faq/19106/calculating-gpa-with-ap-classes.

Example: how the preset bonus changes the same transcript

This illustration uses the calculator preset (+1.0 AP/IB and +0.5 Honors) with four equal-credit courses. Replace those bonuses with your school's actual rules before relying on the weighted result.

Toggle weighted vs unweighted

Use the weighted/unweighted switch to compare both calculations from the same course list. The unweighted figure removes course-level bonuses; the weighted figure applies the selected AP/Honors values. Transcripts and college applications can use different rules, so follow the school's published policy and the application instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an AP class raise my GPA?
There is no single national bonus. Some schools add +1.0 grade point for AP/IB and +0.5 for Honors; others use a different scale or do not weight courses. Under the +1.0 example, an A contributes 5.0 instead of 4.0 and a B contributes 4.0 instead of 3.0. Check your school's grading policy before using a weighted result for an application.
Weighted or unweighted — which do colleges see?
Your high school reports GPA under its own policy. Colleges may recalculate grades using their own rules, so neither a weighted nor unweighted number is universal across applications. Follow each institution's instructions and report the figure it requests.
Is the +1.0 AP bonus universal?
No. +1.0 for AP/IB and +0.5 for Honors are common example bonuses, not a national standard. Schools set their own weighting and caps; select the calculator's course levels to match your transcript policy.
Is a weighted GPA above 4.0 normal?
Yes, if your school weights. A student taking several APs can exceed 4.0 because each AP A contributes 5.0. An unweighted 4.0 remains the maximum on the standard unweighted scale (unless the school awards 4.3 for an A+).
