5.0 Scale GPA Calculator

Calculate a weighted GPA on the 5.0 scale used for AP and Honors courses.

Quick answer: Add your AP, Honors and regular courses; the calculator applies +1.0 (AP/IB) and +0.5 (Honors) bonuses and returns a weighted GPA out of 5.0 alongside the unweighted 4.0 figure.

Weights: Honors +0.5, AP/IB +1.0, capped at 5.0

How it is calculated

Each grade is converted to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0, with ±0.3 steps). Points are multiplied by the course credits, summed, then divided by total credits.

Example: A (4.0) in a 3-credit course + B (3.0) in a 4-credit course = (4.0×3 + 3.0×4) ÷ 7 = 3.43.

What is 5.0 Scale GPA Calculator?

The 5.0 Scale GPA Calculator computes a weighted GPA on the scale many high schools use, where an A in an AP or IB course is worth 5.0. It applies the standard bonuses (+1.0 for AP/IB, +0.5 for Honors) to the base grade points, so the result reflects both your grades and the rigor of your schedule. A 5.0 is the practical ceiling and is only reachable by taking a full load of the most advanced courses and earning top grades.

Common Uses for 5.0 Scale GPA Calculator

  • See your weighted GPA out of 5.0 for class-rank purposes
  • Check how close you are to the 5.0 ceiling
  • Compare a 5.0-scale GPA against the unweighted 4.0 version

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a 5.0-scale GPA calculated?
Base grade points (A = 4.0) plus a bonus per course — +1.0 for AP/IB and +0.5 for Honors — then weighted by credits and averaged. Only advanced courses can reach 5.0, so the scale rewards rigor.
Can a 5.0-scale GPA convert to 4.0?
Not exactly, because the bonus differs per course. To get the unweighted figure, recompute using base points only (A = 4.0 regardless of course level). The calculator shows both.
Do colleges use the 5.0 scale?
Some high schools report it, but most colleges recalculate an unweighted 4.0 GPA for comparison. The 5.0 number is mainly used for class rank and honor rolls at the school level.
