How it is calculated

Each grade is converted to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0, with ±0.3 steps). Points are multiplied by the course credits, summed, then divided by total credits.

Example: A (4.0) in a 3-credit course + B (3.0) in a 4-credit course = (4.0×3 + 3.0×4) ÷ 7 = 3.43.

What is 4.0 Scale GPA Calculator?

The 4.0 Scale GPA Calculator computes an unweighted GPA on the standard scale, where an A is worth 4.0 and there are no bonuses for advanced courses. It is the scale most colleges use when they recalculate applicants' GPAs so that students from different high schools can be compared, and it is the number most applications and scholarships expect when they ask for a GPA out of 4.0.

Common Uses for 4.0 Scale GPA Calculator

  • Get the unweighted GPA that colleges recalculate from your transcript
  • Self-report a 4.0-scale GPA on an application
  • Compare your weighted GPA against the standard 4.0 number

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the 4.0 scale?
A grading scale where the grade points run from 0 (F) to 4.0 (A or A+), with no weighting. A- is 3.7, B+ is 3.3, B is 3.0 and so on. It is the default scale for college GPAs and for most application forms.
How is it different from a weighted GPA?
A weighted GPA adds bonus points for Honors (+0.5) and AP/IB (+1.0) courses, so it can exceed 4.0. The 4.0 scale has no bonuses, which is why colleges use it to compare applicants fairly.
Is 4.0 the maximum?
Yes on the standard unweighted scale, since an A+ is usually also 4.0. A few schools award 4.3 for an A+, but that is uncommon.
