How it is calculated

Each grade is converted to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0, with ±0.3 steps). Points are multiplied by the course credits, summed, then divided by total credits.

Example: A (4.0) in a 3-credit course + B (3.0) in a 4-credit course = (4.0×3 + 3.0×4) ÷ 7 = 3.43.

New cumulative GPA
3.48

Total credits after this term: 44. The new term is weighted by its own credits, which is why a few courses move a long GPA only slightly.

What is University GPA Calculator?

The University GPA Calculator works out a term GPA and a cumulative GPA from your courses and credit hours. It is built for the credit-hour system most universities use, and it handles both semester and quarter calendars, where the same grade point average is calculated but the terms are shorter and the credit weighting differs. Entering a prior GPA and credits lets you see where the new term leaves you overall.

Common Uses for University GPA Calculator

  • Work out your term GPA before grades are officially posted
  • Project your cumulative GPA after this semester or quarter
  • Check the GPA needed next term to hit a target for a scholarship or major

Frequently Asked Questions

How is university GPA different from high school GPA?
The arithmetic is the same — grade points times credits, divided by total credits — but universities almost always use unweighted 4.0 grade points and credit hours that vary by course (a lab might carry four credits, a seminar two). High schools often use equal course weights and sometimes a weighted 5.0 scale.
Does it work for quarter systems?
Yes. Quarter and semester systems compute GPA identically; only the length of the term and the number of terms per year differ. Add the term's courses and credits and the GPA is the same calculation.
Are pass/fail and transfer credits included?
Pass/fail credits usually count toward graduation but not toward GPA, and transferred credits are often shown without grades. Leave them out of the GPA calculation unless your university says otherwise.
