College GPA Calculator

Semester and cumulative GPA on the 4.0 scale, with credit-hour weighting for university courses.

Quick answer: College GPA weights each course by its credit hours: a 4-credit course counts twice as much as a 2-credit one. Enter your courses and credits, and a B in a 4-credit class costs about twice as much GPA as a B in a 2-credit one.

How it is calculated

Each grade is converted to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0, with ±0.3 steps). Points are multiplied by the course credits, summed, then divided by total credits.

Example: A (4.0) in a 3-credit course + B (3.0) in a 4-credit course = (4.0×3 + 3.0×4) ÷ 7 = 3.43.

3.48

Total credits after this term: 44. The new term is weighted by its own credits, which is why a few courses move a long GPA only slightly.

What is College GPA Calculator?

College GPA is calculated on the standard 4.0 scale and weighted by credit hours, which is what makes university grades different from a simple average. A four-credit lecture carries twice the GPA weight of a two-credit seminar, and lab courses usually add their own credits on top. To calculate it, multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, sum the results and divide by the total credits attempted. This calculator does that as you type and can also fold the result into your existing cumulative GPA, using the same credit-weighted method your registrar uses.

Common Uses for College GPA Calculator

  • Check your semester GPA before grades post
  • See whether a four-credit course is worth adding
  • Plan the term GPA needed to stay above a scholarship minimum
  • Forecast your cumulative GPA heading into graduation

Semester GPA vs cumulative GPA

Semester GPA covers only the current term and is what appears on a term transcript; cumulative GPA averages every term by credit. A strong semester lifts the cumulative slowly if you already have many credits — the cumulative mode in the calculator shows exactly how much.

Credit-hour weighting in practice

Suppose you take four courses: 4, 3, 4 and 3 credits. The 4-credit courses make up more than half your term, so their grades set the tone. Dropping a 3-credit course you are failing can therefore protect a GPA more effectively than adding an easy A — one of the few real levers students control.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many credits should I enter?
The credit hours listed in your course catalogue — typically 3 or 4 for a lecture, 1 for a lab. If a course has a combined lecture and lab, add the credits together, because the registrar counts them as one graded course.
How do withdrawals and incompletes count?
A W (withdrawal) usually carries no grade points and no GPA impact, though it may affect financial aid progress. An I (incomplete) is temporary and converts to a letter grade later, at which point it enters the GPA.
Do plus and minus grades matter in college?
At many universities yes — A- is 3.7 and B+ is 3.3 — while some only award whole letters. Check your registrar's grade-point table; if your school ignores plus/minus, enter the plain letter.
What is a good college GPA?
Roughly 3.0 is the common floor for graduate school and most scholarships, 3.5 is a strong competitive number, and 3.8+ is typically considered excellent. Requirements vary sharply by programme.
